August is just days away from being over. Originally I had planned to start our homeschool year two weeks ago. Those weeks have come and gone. Things have been busy and I have just been unmotivated to start our homeschool year. You know it’s time to start the year when the kids are actually asking you to do school! So, tomorrow we will start whether I feel like it or not. Here are a few things I am going to do to help us get a good start on our school year.
Jumping right in and doing every subject on the first day does not sound like fun to me. I have done this before and it never ends well. The days takes what feels like forever and we are all cranky by the time we are finished. This year we are going to start with me giving the kids an overview of what we will be doing. I will pick one or two things for us to do the first day (not sure which subjects yet). The next day we will add more until we reach our full workload. Starting the year off like this helps us all ease into our new routine instead of being thrown in.
MAKE IT FUN!
What can you do that would make the first day/week more enjoyable for everyone? A field trip? Something fun for lunch or dinner? Tomorrow we will take pictures and enjoy a shorter day (see previous paragraph).
GET SOMETHING FUN FOR YOURSELF
One thing that can help motivate me is having something new and pretty. It doesn’t have to be anything big or expensive. Maybe get a new pack of pens that you have really been wanting to try or a pretty notebook. This year I needed some new organizing bins for the bookshelf in our dining room. I went to Target and found something that I liked and put them on my bookshelf. When I see them I smile and it makes me a little more excited to start teaching again because I get to use my new bins!
REMEMBER MOTIVATION AND ROUTINE WILL COME
I keep reminding myself that motivation will come. Starting is the hard part. As we ease in, routine will develop and that is something that I really missed this summer!
What do you do to help kick lack of motivation out the door?
